Don't Be Sheepish—Speak Up for Animals

Don't Be Sheepish—Speak Up for Animals:
Many of the rescue cases that PETA handles involve animals in immediate peril. But even when the risks aren't so obvious, it's still important to lend a hand when animals need any kind of help.
Here's a case in point: When a kind lady saw these unfortunate sheep with heavy, matted coats near a Hayfork, California, hotel, she called PETA for help.

PETA's caseworker persuaded the animals' owner to shear them soon afterward. Since the sheep were otherwise in good health and reasonably well cared for, no charges were filed, but—thanks to one concerned person who spoke up—these animals' lives have been made brighter and more comfortable.
Please always remember: Whenever you see animals in trouble, don't look away—do something.

Scalded to Death at Bristol-Myers Squibb

Scalded to Death at Bristol-Myers Squibb:
A primate at a Covance primate testing lab.
Update: After receiving
PETA's request for an investigation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture found
that Bristol-Myers Squibb was to blame for the hanging death of the monkey and
cited the company for violating the Animal Welfare Act.

 As
if being locked inside a laboratory and treated like a living test
tube weren't torture enough, a whistleblower informed PETA that a monkey and a
rat were recently scalded to death at pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb's
laboratory in Pennington, New Jersey. Their cages were run through the high-pressure
cage washer with the animals still inside,
causing the trapped animals intense agony and terror as the blistering-hot
water burned their flesh.
Also
according to the whistleblower, another monkey strangled to death after she was
attached to the front of her cage, apparently by some sort of leash, and then
left unattended. All three of these tragic deaths, which reportedly occurred
over a six-month period, could have been easily prevented. So what's going on
at Bristol-Myers?
A
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection report substantiates the
whistleblower's report of a monkey dying in the cage washer,
and based on this, PETA suspects that the other allegations are also true. But
it's Bristol-Myers Squibb's turn to be in hot water now: PETA has submitted
complaints to the USDA and the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, asking both to
investigate and hit
the multibillion-dollar company where it hurts—in its bank account—if these
allegations are true.
But
what the pharma giant really must do is stop subjecting tens of thousands of
dogs, rabbits, mice, rats, and monkeys to imprisonment, pain, and death. PETA,
which holds stock in Bristol-Myers Squibb specifically for the purpose of
addressing the company's board and stockholders, has submitted a shareholder
resolution urging it to reduce the company's reliance on animal tests by switching
to modern, non-animal methods and to provide greater transparency of its animal
testing practices. Please, click
here to ask Bristol-Myers Squibb's CEO
to take personal
responsibility for making sure that these recommendations are implemented.

Subject: 130 dogs abandoned in woods by approved rescue! - Lebanon, KY
The shelter is trying like heck to save these dogz but as you can imagine, the shelter needs help – blankets, towels, money, foster homes, additional rescue groups, etc.  In addition to the contact information immediately below, there is more information of value further down.  For the most part I am leaving out breed-specific rescues. If I learn more, I will include them.  Please contact your contacts and have them contact their contacts. This little shelter deserves the best in this struggle.  I’ve tried to organize what was a chaotic e-mail. I hope everything is clear.  wjw

A $1,000 reward being offered to anyone who helps with the prosecution of the person or people responsible for abandoning of the dogs.  The number to the Marion County Animal Shelter is: 270-692-0464

Over the past two months, more than 130 dogs have been mysteriously dropped off on the side of roads across Marion County with no explanation. Now, the shelter and the sheriff's department, along with the United States Humane Society, are asking for the public's help to catch those responsible.

Each one has a different story.  Some adapting better than others, but the one thing they all have in common is how they came to the Marion County shelter. 130 dogs have been dropped off in remote areas of the county since December - 10 found on Minnie Brown Road, 13 on Jim Brown Road, 19 on Moore's Creek Road and 36 on Campbellsville Road. Nine of those had been shot in the head.

They were discarded on the side of the highway with a single bowl of food.

The shelter has been so overwhelmed here they haven't even had time to name any of these dogs. Their fate rests in the hands of people who want to adopt. and if not, they will be put to sleep. But, the shelter isn't giving up, needing blankets, towels, foster homes and any kind of monetary donations are helpful.  Most importantly, they want to know who is responsible.

I had a transport running thru KY scheduled today, and one of the transporters told me about this! She says the offending party has been arrested and IS in jail as of today, the BAD thing is this woman was an APPROVED rescuer and took MANY of these dogs after they had been gotten UTD on shots and altered, some of the purebreds she was keeping and having them have puppies to sell, the ones she didn't think she could sell, she dumped in the woods! Many were struck by cars, 9 shot in the head and killed. A local groomer has 20 of these dogs trying to get them groomed and hopefully new homes!

IF ANYONE can HELP take any of these dogs, LEGITIMATE RESCUES, I will try and arrange transport of them to you!  Let's all work together and see if we can't make a difference in the lives of these poor dogs!

Canine Celeb Milestones

Canine Celeb Milestones: We are so pleased to announce that another 'Vick dog' has earned her stripes as a therapy dog. Grace is one of the ten dogs that came to live with BAD RAP until she found her people. She just passed her Delta Pet Partners evaluation and will be on the job in about a month. We're so very proud of her foster parents and her new family for all they've done to show the world that even dogs from bad pasts can shine with a little help from their friends.

This summer will be the five year anniversary of the dogs' rescue from Bad Newz Kennels. Grace follows several dogs from the case who've earned impressive accolades. Photo: Mark Rogers Photography

In other big news, one of the oldest dogs from the same case - Georgia - recently went home to a new family. She's been living at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary since arriving in Utah in late 2007.

She was one of our favorites so of course we're thrilled. Right: Georgia kissing Tim Racer during her evaluations with that tell-tale hanging tongue slurp that comes from having lost most of her teeth. She is a true character and impressed us with her warmth and strong sense of self. We hope she enjoys a happy and peaceful retirement living the good life.

Lies, Fraud, Cruelty—and You Paid for It

Lies, Fraud, Cruelty—and You Paid for It:

Following the finding
by the federal Office of Research Integrity (ORI) that a former professor at
the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University hurt animals
in experiments and then lied about the results to get more federal funding, PETA
has sent a letter to the director of the National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) urging the agency to take
back more than $2.8 million in taxpayer money granted to the disgraced (and
disgraceful) vivisector during the period of misconduct.

Mean Methods, False
Findings

Specifically, the ORI determined that Michael
Miller—formerly a professor and chair of SUNY Upstate's department of
neuroscience and physiology—lied about the results of his experiments in which
he forced alcohol into pregnant mice, rats, and monkeys. The babies of these animals were then killed and their
brains were cut out. Miller submitted the fabricated data in his applications
to get even
more funding
from NIAAA—part of the federal National Institutes of Health—and also sent them
to scientific journals. Several journals have already retracted the articles.

Unfortunately, this kind of fraud isn't unheard of.
The only animal some experimenters seem to care about is the cash cow—and it
appears some of them will do just about anything to keep the grant money
flowing. If they're going to lie about the results, they could at least have
the decency to leave the animals out and fake the experiments altogether.

How You Can Help
Animals in Laboratories

Please tell your representative and senators in Congress to
divert public money away from cruel animal experiments like Miller's and into promising, lifesaving, and
relevant clinical and non-animal research.

Urge NIH to Yank Harvard Funding After Monkey Deaths

Urge NIH to Yank Harvard Funding After Monkey Deaths:

You don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to know that all mammals need water to survive, yet this basic biology principle is apparently lost on the clever folks at Harvard. For the second time in three months, a monkey has died of dehydration at the Ivy League institution: On Sunday, an elderly cotton-top tamarin was euthanized at Harvard Medical School (HMS) after it was discovered that the monkey's cage had no water bottle, an inexcusable oversight that led the university to suspend new experiments at its New England Primate Research Center (NEPRC).

The monkey's death came on the same day that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) made public an inspection report that revealed three other incidents involving the neglectful endangerment of monkeys at the facility in the past three months, including another monkey's death. This recent series of deaths has prompted PETA to call on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to suspend all funding to HMS and NEPRC and to demand a refund of any grant money spent on activity that violated federal animal protection laws, which is required by federal grant guidelines.

Milo was imprisoned at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC), a facility where PETA conducted a shocking undercover investigation

A History of Violations

The USDA has cited HMS and NEPRC for more than 20 violations of the Animal Welfare Act during the past two years, including the following incidents involving serious injuries and deaths:

  • In January of this year, two primates became severely dehydrated and one died. In another incident, a primate suffered two broken bones when his leg was smashed in a heavy cage door. Another primate suffered serious foot injuries after he and others escaped from improperly secured cages.
  • In December 2011, a staff member caught an escaped primate with a net, performed an imaging procedure on him, and upon returning the animal to his cage, discovered that he had died.
  • In July 2011, a primate had to be euthanized after he was given an overdose of an anesthetic that caused acute kidney failure.
  • In June 2010, a primate was found dead in a cage after it was run through a scalding-hot mechanical cage washer.

What PETA is asking for isn't unprecedented. Other universities, including the University of Connecticut and the University of Michigan, have had to return thousands of dollars in grant money after PETA and others uncovered animal welfare violations. After all, it seems only reasonable that our hard-earned tax dollars shouldn't be paying for activity that violates the law.

How You Can Help

While the recent deaths of monkeys at Harvard appear to have resulted from carelessness, HMS and NEPRC confine 2,300 other primates and deliberately commit unspeakable horrors against them, such as drilling holes into their skulls and subjecting them to cocaine addiction experiments. Ask the NIH to stop funding this cruelty at Harvard and elsewhere.

Jake newest Rescue by Coleen! :-)

Jake newest Rescue by Coleen! :-):

For those of you who are unaware of what REALLY happened, since Coleen made a point of leaving out the facts about Jake. Here it is, Jake got into a fight with another dog of Sandy Shaw. Sandy broke up the dog fight as she pulled away, the tip of her index finger on her left hand was bitten off!!!! Nail and all! Instead of calling animal control. She contacted the rescuer, Coleen to come get the dog. I wonder why Coleen has let out such important information on something so critical. Selfishly setting up a chip in to secure her expeneses to transport the dog. NOT ONE THING WAS MENTIONED ABOUT WHAT SANDY ENDURED. She is missing her finger tip!!!!! Went on with her goonies to bash Sandy on her wall and claimed the dog was flea infested and had worms. However, it did not stop Coleen from having the dog who the night before attacked the owner and ripped off part of her finger, flea and worm infested cuddle and sleep on her son on his bed. EITHER THIS IS BIGGEST CRAP OR HER MOTHERING SKILLS NEED TO BE QUESTIONED. AND AS FOR AMY, WHO ALSO WENT ON TO BASH SANDY AND SAY SHAME ON YOU SANDY YOU SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO OWN AN ANT! AMY SHAME ON YOU! Coleen, KARMA... Or maybe you already had a taste of that with Loonie Farms??? Or is this part of what NKN teaches it's followers?

Another great TV commercial featuring shelter pets:
Interesting to see how many companies have taken to the cause of promoting shelters and rescuing pets. But while the Bud Light WEEGO commercial hit airwaves during the Super Bowl, this spot, by Chevy, drives home the many great characteristcs of America's shelter dogs.

Also of significance is the number of pit bull type dogs that are proudly on display by their owners...further highlighting these dogs as dogs own by mainstream Americans. Enjoy.

A front group for the meat, puppy mill, tobacco, and alcohol industries as well as other industries that use and abuse animals is desperately trying to thwart animal protection efforts by publicly attacking PETA. The group got its comeuppance on Jane Velez-Mitchell's show Monday night, when the HLN host invited PETA Senior Vice President of Communications Lisa Lange to talk about the deceptive group's underhanded attacks. Here is some of the interview:

If the meat, dairy, puppy mill, and entertainment industries and their shills were genuinely concerned about the plight of homeless dogs and cats, they would actually do something about it, as PETA is, by conducting massive spay-and-neuter initiatives and encouraging people to adopt animals from animal shelters instead of buying them from businesses that churn out new puppies and kittens to add to the mix.

IHOP's 'Lorax' Meals: Devastation on a Plate:

What
a rooty-tooty bunch of hooey. IHOP is using the eco-friendly message of The Lorax to lure families in for
Dr. Seuss–themed meals that are chock-full of factory-farmed meat, eggs, and dairy
products. The restaurant couldn't serve anything less environmentally friendly than
if it put centuries-old Amazon trees on a plate.

How IHOP Is Hurting the Planet

While
the tree seed–encrusted bookmarks the restaurant is handing out to kids are a
nice touch, IHOP would be doing a lot more good for the planet if it offered
dishes that weren't concocted out of meat and dairy products that obliterate natural resources and are a major cause of climate change.

Pit Bull Kills Poodle; Owner Banned from Owning Dogs for 10 Years

Pit Bull Kills Poodle; Owner Banned from Owning Dogs for 10 Years:

article image

The owner of a Pit Bull that fatally mauled a toy Poodle in its own home will not be allowed to own another dog for ten years, a court ruled in Ontario, Canada, on February 27, 2012.

Rick Travale, owner of the 80-lb.Pit Bull, was also ordered by pay a total of $5,007 to cover veterinarian expenses for the tiny dog, which had to be euthanized because of the severity of his injuries.

On Christmas morning, 2011, Shannon Johnson answered the knock of a young neighbor girl on the door of her home on Wood Street. When she opened the door, a Pit Bull who was on the street, ran into the house and attacked the family’s small white poodle, Max...

Johnson grabbed the pit bull to pull it away from Max, but it broke loose and ran out the door,” leaving behind a hallway splattered with blood and Max clinging to life,” according to Spec.Com. Her young son, Jacob, 6, watched the whole event in terror.

“The entire family was traumatized says Jim Reeve, Jacob’s father. “There was blood … all over. It was horrible,” Reeve had gone out to get coffee and was not there until shortly after the attack. He reported that the scene was chaotic and emotional, with everyone focusing on desperate efforts to save Max. Little Max made a valiant fight to survive but had to be put down that night.

About 45 minutes earlier on December 25, the same pit bull had attacked Virginia Vader a few blocks away while she was walking her dog. She was saved by the efforts of a passerby.

The incident has horrified dog lovers in the usually quiet neighborhood and many reported that their hearts were deeply touched when they learned that Jacob has Asperger syndrome, a mild form of autism. Jim Reeve reported that Jabob is afraid of big dogs and added that this past Christmas was difficult. “It was much more emotional, and we talked of Max,” he said.”

Reeve is adamant about pursuing the matter further with a lawsuit against the owner. “It’s definitely not over, he told Spec.com..” Since the attack occurred, Johnson and Reeve have filed repeatedly with the City for information on the identity of the dog owner. However, it was only a few weeks ago, when they were summoned to testify in court that they discovered the name of Rick Travale. They had already filed a $25,000 lawsuit against two other people believed to own the dog.

Johnson was spared testifying and having to relive the incident in court because Travale pleaded guilty to two counts of violating the Dog Owners Liability Act. He was banned from owning another dog for ten years because of (1) failing to prevent the dog from biting or attacking a person or domestic animal and (2) allowing the Pit Pull to stray. He was fined $1,000 for each charge. A $500 victim surcharge was added.

The Pit Bull was impounded shortly after the attack and was euthanized by Animal Control.

In a 2009 incident in Arizona, a small white poodle named, Fabian, was killed by a Pit Bull that ran across the street and attacked while the tiny dog was on leash in his own driveway. This led to the passage of “Fabian’s Law” in 2011, which allows recovery of veterinary costs and contains other provisions:

Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder Are Paying for Tests on Animals

Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder Are Paying for Tests on Animals
My household is going to be free of ALL animal tested products. As it turns out, what a process. How ignorant I am that most products in my home have been tested on primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, etc..As animal advocates, we exert the largest portion of our time on missions that burden our heart. The animal testing is an "out of site, out of mind" injustice. The facts are that the animals are tortured, tied down, their feet never touch the grass, they never leave the cage. A life so gruesome. Being an OBJECT, just a number tattood on their ear or a tag on their cage. Procter and Gamble, Johnson and Johnson are on the list as some of the largest companies that test on animals. There are alternatives that other companies are using. This is also a dirty secret kept by major Universities. How will I tell my child, the Senior Class President, that she will NOT be attending the school of her dreams, FSU? Well, I hope she chooses not to go.They refer to them as vertebrates. Chilling. We, in numbers, by taking actions....even just one a month can help in the elimination of such cruelty. One email, boycotting products...a letter. This is the 14th year for the annual Procter and Gamble boycott by the animal community. These are just a few of the Procter and Gamble products/brands you may have in your home. Cover Girl, Pampers, Max Factor, Panteen, Clearasil, Tampax, Clairol, Gillette. Thousands of animals are killed, burned and mamed by testing each year. The address for P and G is Procter and Gamble Corporate Office, 1 Proctor and Gamble Plaza, Cincinnati, Ohio. Share your feelings by mail and share this cause if it speaks to your heart.
